Summer Food

One of my favorite things about summer is the abundance of delicious food (both healthy and unhealthy). Food is a social event. How often do we meet up with friends and family and base the interaction upon a meal of some sort? The use of food as celebration is a tradition thousands of years old and I find this tradition to be at full throttle during the summer months.

What is better than a BBQ? Or food at an open house?

My ideal meal is a grilled hamburger on a lovely sesame seed bun with ketchup, a touch of mustard, and a nice piece of lettuce. Residing on the remainder of my plate would be baked beans and Doritos (preferably Nacho cheese but any kind will suffice). There is something about the combination of ground beef, baked beans, and Doritos that I adore. Maybe I'll make my own casserole out of it.

I also like open houses where I can graze a selection of food such as fried chicken, fruit salad, Doritos, etc and polish it all off with a slice of cake. The nice thing about open houses is that there is no commitment. If you're having a good time, you stay and hang out. Maybe play horse shoes or something. If it is lame, then you make your appearance, grab some food, and break out like a 13 year old's face. This can be easily accomplished through the simple comment of "we've got another open house, one of my wife/husband's cousins graduated." No one will ever question this and you're home free.

I also greatly enjoy grilled chicken. Grilling chicken takes care, the grill must be hot but not too hot. The key to grilling good chicken is moisture, you've got to keep the (skinless, boneless breasts is pretty much all I eat) chicken moist with a frequent brushing of marinade/sauce (Italian dressing is easy and delicious) or by using a spray bottle. Brining the chicken for several hours before grilling is also a great idea.

In addition to the above, I love grilled hot dogs and bratwurst. There is just something great and easy about a hot dog. My silly wife, she won't touch hot dogs. I think she's crazy.

Anyways, I was hungry when I started to write this. But as I've consumed my lunch, my drive for this post has waned. Funny how hunger or thirst affects you like that. Don't grocery shop on an empty stomach...

Keep it real,

Big Steve

True so true about the shopping when hungry. You always come home with the weirdest junk food when you do that, things you would not normally even buy! And inevitably, you don't come home with the key ingredient you needed to make dinner, what's up with that?
